I’m going to start with a little retelling of something that happened to us last night on the island -
So setting the scene, I’m in a group with 4 other guildies and were coin grinding. if it moves we’re killing it whilst nattering over mumble the whole time. Then comes along a hordie who’s tagged for pvp and manages to bait us into accidentally attacking him through careful positioning on mobs. He is as awesome at pvp as i am not (if there was a scale we’d be pretty good starts and ends to the range) and whilst he can’t kill us whilst we work as a team we aren’t managing to kill him either.
Finally we manage it and think that’s the end of it and get on with our coin collecting. The shout for a rare comes up (the ghost ship thingy) and we all charge off in that direction. All of a sudden the hordie is back clearly seeing us break formation and hopeful for a chance to pick a few of us off. I get hit and dismounted but just keep on running, we are nearly at the rare, turn the last corner and bump into a group of rare chasers…a huge (30+) alliance group of rare hunters!
He/she probably could have carried on and killed me anyway but instead we get the glorious sight of them stopping dead in their tracks, stand still for a good 10 seconds considering their options and then legging it never to be seen again.
Now i cant think of anywhere else in the game on a pve server that we could ever see such an arbitrary chain of events occur, where you can randomly bump into a small army of players. The group elements of the island, whilst occurring in the same spots repeatedly, are none the less loads of fun, encourage cooperation between players and are varied enough to make it still feel fun after hours of doing the same grind.
Furthermore the charity epics, suddenly all my lvl 90 alts are viable again, this has opened up so many new avenues to me for things to do and made me very happy.
Also on the positive front, the hidden chests at the end of bits of rope and concealed in seemingly inaccessible places, i know after a few weeks this wont seem like a challenge anymore but right now im loving puzzling out how to reach them, the rope bound chest being my favourite so far, both as a challenge and a spectator sport (I hang out below it sometimes rezzing people as they fall to their deaths )
Then there’s the proving grounds which i am currently begrudging because its showing i still have a lot to learn but at the same time in a calmer mood am loving for the exact same reason! Its never nice to know you suck but at the same time you have a platform to get better without being shouted at, i honestly rate this as one of the greatest additions to the game since… well just about anything i can think of!
To give this post some sort of balance I will also cover some of the negatives for me about the island -
The 4 bosses in the centre dont really work as intended because there are too many active players in that area, the barriers go up when the boss is active but its still easy just to fall in, even easier for people to ‘accidently’ pull them and cause them to despawn and very hard to figure out if people standing around are waiting to kill them or just standing around.
The rep grind i am actually fine with. I know its going to be a loooong grind but that’s cool in my opinion, the only thing i don’t agree with is the ability to get coins with valour being only accessible at honoured (or maybe revered, i cant remember). Its not even that i want that option particularly, but i do want something to spend my valour points on , upgrades just don’t come along fast enough to use them up at a reasonable rate, so right now any valour i get is wasted and there’s nothing i can do about it (and yes i know, buy haunted spirits or whatever but everyone’s doing that and the demand just isn’t there, its just wasting vp by another name)
The graveyard location near ordos. it respawns you so fast that you have to be on the ball to cancel it so you can run to your body, if you don’t…well grats your probably going to die again as there are at least 2 powerful elite mobs between you and anywhere else on the map that can one shot lesser geared characters and two shot just about anyone else other than tanks. you can bubble past one but all the cooldowns in the world don’t get you past both.
